Nabtesco Pneumatic Remote Control System Service

Specialist independent field engineer for Nabtesco pneumatic remote control systems on 2-stroke marine diesel engines. Onboard service at ports worldwide — valve block servicing, cylinder replacement, positioner adjustment, and emergency callout support.

Available Worldwide · Based in Poland

Systems Covered

Nabtesco Corporation is a major supplier of pneumatic remote control systems for 2-stroke marine diesel engines. Nabtesco systems are found on a large proportion of vessels fitted with MAN B&W and other 2-stroke main engines where Nabtesco has supplied the remote control system as an independent provider. The Nabtesco system handles engine speed control, direction of rotation, fuel regulation, and starting sequence management through a pneumatic logic circuit.

Field service covers Nabtesco governor control assemblies, standalone valve units, pneumatic cylinder assemblies, and the associated control signal circuits. Both complete system installations and individual Nabtesco components fitted as part of a mixed-manufacturer control arrangement are within scope.

  • Nabtesco full governor control assemblies
  • Nabtesco pneumatic valve blocks and manifold assemblies
  • Pneumatic cylinder units and piston assemblies
  • Positioner units and feedback mechanisms
  • Air supply conditioning units and filter assemblies
  • Speed control and fuel regulation pneumatics
  • Starting and reversing pneumatic sub-circuits

Scope of Work

All service work is carried out onboard in the engine room and control room. The scope is agreed with the chief engineer prior to commencement. Work follows OEM Nabtesco technical documentation where available, supplemented by component-level knowledge developed through direct field experience:

  • System-level fault diagnosis using signal tracing and pressure measurement
  • Valve block disassembly, inspection, seal replacement, and testing
  • Pneumatic cylinder removal, seal overhaul, piston inspection, and reassembly
  • Positioner disassembly, inspection of feedback mechanism, and functional adjustment
  • Control signal circuit verification and correction
  • Air supply conditioning unit inspection and filter replacement
  • Tubing and fitting inspection for leaks, blockages, or deterioration
  • Leak test of all overhauled components and circuit connections
  • Functional test of complete Nabtesco control system under air pressure
  • Written service report with component traceability and test results

Typical Fault Conditions

The following fault conditions are commonly encountered on Nabtesco pneumatic remote control systems during onboard field service:

Fault Symptom Probable Cause Typical Intervention
Valve block not switching correctly Internal seal failure, contamination, pilot pressure loss Valve block disassembly, seal replacement, clean and test
Pneumatic cylinder sticking or incomplete stroke Piston seal wear, internal corrosion, end cap leakage Cylinder overhaul, piston seal replacement, bore inspection
Positioner output unstable or offset Feedback component wear, internal contamination, spring fatigue Positioner disassembly, clean and inspect, adjustment verification
Speed control signal not transmitted Control circuit relay fault, signal tubing restriction or break Signal trace, relay inspection, tubing inspection and clear-through
Starting sequence fails at specific step Timing relay fault, pilot valve failure, starting air circuit leak Step-by-step circuit isolation, relay overhaul, leak test
Air leaks throughout control circuit General O-ring deterioration, fitting corrosion or loosening Full circuit leak test, fitting and seal kit replacement programme

Onboard Service Procedure

Nabtesco system service follows a structured procedure. The sequence is adapted to the nature of the fault and the time available during the port stay or drydock period:

  1. Pre-service inspection: Review of vessel maintenance records and fault history reported by the crew. Visual inspection of Nabtesco components, connections, and control stand. Photographic documentation of initial condition.
  2. Air supply check: Verification of control air supply pressure, cleanliness, and regulator function. Confirmation that supply-side issues are not contributing to symptoms before component work begins.
  3. Systematic fault isolation: Signal tracing and pressure measurement to identify the specific component or circuit section responsible for the fault. Comparison against OEM performance parameters.
  4. Component overhaul: Disassembly of identified components. Internal inspection, cleaning, measurement of wear, seal replacement, and reassembly using appropriate seal kits. Replacement of components where wear is beyond acceptable limits.
  5. Leak and function test: Individual component leak test under air pressure. Verification of correct output signal, cylinder stroke, or valve switching response as applicable to the component type.
  6. System functional test: Full test of the complete Nabtesco control system including speed commands, direction changes, and starting sequence where the engine and vessel operational status allows.
  7. Service documentation: Written report covering pre-service condition observations, all work performed, seal kits and parts used, post-service test results, and recommendations for planned maintenance or future attention.

Availability & Mobilisation

Field service is available worldwide. The engineer is based in Poland and can mobilise to ports in Europe, Asia, and the Middle East. Port pass requirements and pre-boarding documentation are coordinated directly with the ship's agent or the technical superintendent's office.

For scheduled port stay work, a minimum of 3 to 7 days advance notice is preferred to allow travel and visa arrangements to be completed. Nabtesco-specific seal kits and replacement components will be sourced in advance where the vessel and engine details are provided with sufficient lead time.

Drydock assignments allow for more thorough system overhaul, including access to components that cannot be safely worked during normal ship operation. Pre-drydock planning consultation is available to define the work scope and prepare a parts list aligned with Nabtesco component requirements.

Emergency Support

For Nabtesco pneumatic control system failures affecting main engine operation or manoeuvring, telephone-based remote diagnostic support is available at any time. The engineer can assist the chief engineer in isolating the fault and advising on temporary measures to restore limited operability pending full repair.

Emergency mobilisation to the vessel is assessed based on port location, travel logistics, and the nature of the fault. Where direct boarding is not immediately possible, remote guidance is provided as fully as the situation allows. Full documentation of all emergency actions is provided upon completion.
